The best time to swim in Portugal is the summer season, from mid‑June to October. Most seaside resorts benefit from a pleasant sea temperature. However, if you prefer the north of the country or the beaches near Lisbon, expect cooler bathing water. On the other hand, if you favour the Algarve, you can enjoy warmth and sun and relish a pleasant sea temperature.
November and December suit sports enthusiasts, who find ideal conditions for surfing and other water sports.
Unfavourable times to swim in Portugal
The period from January to March is not suitable for pleasant swimming. However, it is not uncommon to see surfers or bodyboarders donning wetsuits to brave the cold water and practice their sport.
